Guide

Understanding Commercial Waste Contracts

Your Duty of Care obligation

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, every UK business has a legal Duty of Care to ensure its waste is stored safely, handled only by a registered waste carrier, and disposed of properly — this responsibility does not end when a bin is collected. Using an unregistered carrier, even unknowingly, can leave your business liable if the waste is later fly-tipped or mishandled.

Waste transfer notes

Every time waste changes hands — from you to your carrier, and from your carrier to the disposal or recycling site — a waste transfer note should be raised, describing the waste and confirming both parties are authorised to handle it. You should keep copies for at least two years; they are the paper trail that demonstrates you met your Duty of Care if it is ever queried.

General, recycling, and hazardous waste

General commercial waste covers everyday non-hazardous material and is usually the cheapest stream. Recycling streams (cardboard, glass, mixed dry recyclables) often cost less per collection and can reduce your overall bill if volumes justify a dedicated bin. Hazardous and clinical waste — including certain chemicals, batteries, oils, and medical waste — has stricter handling, documentation (consignment notes) and disposal rules, and must go to a specifically licensed facility.

Right-sizing your collections

Bin size and collection frequency are the two levers that most affect your bill. Businesses often overpay by keeping a collection schedule set when they moved in, long after their actual waste volumes changed. A quick audit of what is really going into each bin, and how full it typically is on collection day, is usually enough to spot easy savings.

Costs

How much does commercial waste collection cost?

As a rough guide for 2026, commercial waste collection typically costs around £5–£30 per bin, per collection, driven mainly by bin size, how often it’s emptied and the type of waste. A small business on a fortnightly 240-litre general-waste bin might pay roughly £8–£15 a lift, while a larger 1,100-litre bin collected weekly runs closer to £20–£35. The figures below are indicative market ranges to benchmark against — not a quote.

What actually moves the price

Four things decide your bill more than anything else: bin size, collection frequency, waste type (general vs recycling vs hazardous), and your location and access. Landfill tax also pushes up the cost of general waste that could have been recycled — which is why segregating recycling is often the quickest way to bring a waste bill down. A good rate isn’t the lowest headline price; it’s the right bin size and frequency for what you actually throw away.

What’s the best price for business waste management?

There’s no single “best” price — the best deal is the cheapest quote for a bin size and collection frequency that actually matches your volumes, from a registered carrier, with no hidden container-rental or admin fees. We compare quotes from multiple UK commercial waste providers against your postcode, bin size and waste type, so you can see the best business waste management prices available to you rather than accepting the first quote a single provider offers.
