Shop insurance
What shop insurance covers for UK retailers, what drives the cost, and the extensions retail businesses most often miss.
Shop insurance is a packaged policy rather than a single cover. It bundles the things a retail business needs — stock, contents, glass, money, public and employers’ liability, and usually business interruption — into one schedule. The convenience is real, but it also means the individual limits are easy not to read, and that is where retailers get caught.
What is normally in the package
| Section | What it does |
|---|---|
| Stock | Replaces stock lost to fire, flood, theft or malicious damage. Check it reflects peak, not average. |
| Contents and fit-out | Shelving, counters, tills, refrigeration and any improvements you made. |
| Glass | Shopfront glazing — a frequent claim and cheap to include. |
| Money | Cash on the premises, in a safe, and in transit to the bank. |
| Public liability | Injury to a customer on your premises. |
| Employers’ liability | Legally required as soon as you employ anyone, including family. |
| Business interruption | Income while you cannot trade — the section that decides whether you reopen. |
The extensions retailers most often miss
- Deterioration of refrigerated stock — a compressor failure over a bank holiday is a routine claim and a routine gap.
- Seasonal stock increase — many policies automatically uplift the sum insured for a defined period. Check the dates match your actual peak.
- Goods in the open or in outbuildings — often excluded or heavily sub-limited.
- Theft without forcible entry — commonly excluded, which matters for shoplifting and staff dishonesty.
Declare alcohol, tobacco and high-value stock accurately
These materially change the theft risk and the sum insured. Understating them to reduce a premium is the kind of thing that gets a claim reduced or declined outright — and it will be checked after a loss, not before.
What it costs
Because shop insurance is a package, the range is wider than for a single cover. The drivers are your stock value at peak, your trade, your location and crime figures, your security, and whether you sell high-theft categories. Two shops of identical size on the same street can price very differently on stock mix alone.
Shop insurance: frequently asked questions
Is shop insurance a legal requirement?+
The package as a whole is not, but employers’ liability within it is legally required as soon as you employ anyone — including part-time and family members. Your lease will very often also require public liability and contents cover to a stated minimum, which makes the rest effectively compulsory in practice.
What is a reasonable sum insured for shop stock?+
Your peak stock level, valued at replacement cost, not your average across the year. If your stock doubles for Christmas or a seasonal trade, insuring the average leaves you underinsured at exactly the moment a loss would hurt most. Check whether your policy includes an automatic seasonal uplift and when it applies.
Does shop insurance cover shoplifting?+
Often not in the way retailers expect. Many policies cover theft only where there is forcible and violent entry, which excludes shoplifting during opening hours and staff dishonesty. Both can usually be added, but they are typically separate sections rather than part of the standard theft cover.
